Frequently asked questions
1. What exactly is a Group Build?
A group build is an opportunity for modelers with similar interests to get together and build models of the same (or similar) subject. In this particular case, we're building the F-14 Tomcat in all of its variants and associated squadron markings. If you look over at ARC, you'll see a number of different group builds of various subjects - have a look over there to see how they operate.
2. Can I join the Group Build?
Absolutely! The F-14 Group Build is open to ALL modelers, of all skill levels and abilities, and you can build a Tomcat in any scale that you desire. The only stipulation is that you must build your Tomcat in actual, real-life markings. Hypothetical markings are not permitted for this particular Group Build.
3. What are the starting and ending dates for this Group Build?
The starting date for this Group Build is January 1, 2005, and it ends promptly on June 1st. Five months should be more than enough time for everybody to finish a model (or maybe even a couple). I'm sticking with a firm deadline on this Group Build for two reasons:
I don't want it to drag on forever
Having a fixed deadline actually encourages people to get stuff done.
UPDATE: The Group Build deadline has been extended to July 1st, due to popular demand. That means that any entries must be in my inbox by 11:59 P.M. on June 30th.......NO EXCEPTIONS!
4. I tried to submit a Group Build article using the e-mail address on the main page, and my e-mail kicked back. What happened?
UPDATE: the Group Build Admin address (groupbuild @scaleair.com) is now active. If you have any problems sending e-mail to this address, please contact me in the ARC Tomcat GB forum, and we'll get it straightened out.
5. How many models may I enter?
As many models as you can complete between January 1 and June 1.
6. Is this a contest?
No. The difference between a contest and a Group Build is that, in a contest, someone has to judge the winners. the main idea of a Group Build is to get people sitting down at their workbenches and building models. There are no winners or losers. Actually, let me correct that - everyone who completes a model for the Group Build is a winner in that they have the satisfaction of having another nice model or two sitting on their display shelf!
7. If it's not a contest, then why are there prizes?
Very simple, actually. It's a good incentive to get people building, and in the case of a Group Build, the prizes are awarded by raffle. This gives everyone a chance at the prizes, regardless of their skill levels. We've been fortunate enough to come up with some very generous sponsors for raffle prizes, and my hope is that most people who enter a completed model will win a prize of some sort.
8. How are the raffle prizes awarded?
For this particular Group Build, each completed entry sent to me will be issued a number. The entry number also becomes your raffle number. Therefore, if you enter two models, you get two raffle numbers, and so on, up to a maximum of four raffle numbers per entrant. In other words, once you build four models for the Group Build, you're maxed out on raffle entries. When the Group Build is over, I will draw the winning numbers at random out of a hat, and will keep drawing numbers until we run out of prizes. You can see a list of the winners on the Group Build main page.
