Academy 1/48 F-14B, VF-24 Renegades
by Jaroslav Háječek  (Jarda Hajecek)

I would like to submit my 1/48 Academy F14B Camel Smoker.

I decided to model one of the very early B model Tomcats from the VF-24.

I would like to quote the text from ARC-001 decal sheet review by Steve Bamford: „"F-14B used for a detachment to Fallon in 1990 for air to ground delivery tactics. The second F-14B is the F-14B Camel Smoker from the VF-24 Renegades. The artwork for the nose art is of a Camel Jockey being chased by 2 F-14 VF-24 Adversaries.“

Anyway the scheme, really caught my interest. I like to model aircraft in unusual paint schemes since most of modern jets wear rather “boring” gray/gray/gray schemes. Do not take me wrong I like the grey ones too. I have not seen any stenciling on the aircraft in the available pictures, so my model wears only the camouflage and the nose-art.

The model as mentioned is the academy 1/48 release. Good overall. Really the best bet if you do not feel like spending a fortune on a Hasegawa kit. The model was built OOB, with the addition of resin seats from Pavla Models (www.pavlamodels.cz). The most challenging was the need of re-scribing the forward fuselage. It was my first attempt to do some serious re-scribing. I think it did turn out OK.

As for weathering I used only an oil wash in the panel lines. I did not have enough guts to do something more. The aircraft were painted in wash-off acrylics, so I believe that after a few flights the paint scheme was pretty battered. I wanted to have the model right out the door of the paint-shop so to speak.

Well, here I present you the model for your viewing. I will truly appreciate all the feedback anyone can give me. Email: hajecekj@volny.cz

Cheers and happy modeling!
