BUILD ENTRY no.26

Hasegawa
1/72 F-14A, VF-1 Wolfpack
by Andy Mullen

This is the 1/72 Hasegawa "Atlantic Fleet Squadron " Kit [E14 #00544], with markings from CAM #72021.
The kit was built out of the box, with the additions being the overhead ejector handles on the seats, weapons and pilots from a spare Fujimi kit, and the CAM markings.
The construction was started on the 26 Feb 2005, and for this build I had discovered and printed off Brian Plescia's Build Review. After reading this I noticed Brian mentions about using the Fujimi pilots, so I dug out my Fujimi kits and decided to use them. With the intention to build at least one of my Tomcats in the classic launch position, I chose this one. As there were to be pilots in the cockpit, I used the kit seats and Instrument panel decals.
After most of the major construction work was completed, I used various Alclad II on the leading edges, gun port, and engines. These were then masked off along with the canopy. The canopy area was then sprayed Flat black, along with preshading of the panel lines. When cured, the underside and other parts were sprayed with Humbrol Flat White #34.
Unfortunately due to a cock-up with the mixture of thinners and paint, the first couple of thin layers on the underside didn't work out, so I had to spray out the preshading. After the White had cured, I masked off the necessary areas, and the Ventral Fins and the tail tips where sprayed with Humbrol Insignia Red #153. Next up was masking again and spraying Humbrol Gull Grey #129 (FS26440). The Radome was then sprayed with Humbrol Radome Tan #148 (FS33613). After a few of light coats of Klear (Future) were sprayed, the decals were applied .
An Oil wash of Winsor & Newton Burnt Sienna and English Distilled Turpentine was liberally
applied and then cleaned up with q-tips and kitchen towel damped with the turps. I also went over the engines with Tamiya Smoke and thinners. To finish, the landing gear & doors, weapons , seats, Pilot, RIO and antennas were added. The wings, tails and horizontal stabs were slipped into their
respective slots/holes and the canopy placed on.
