1/72 Hasegawa F-14A, VF-124 Gunfighters
by Andy Mullen
Chesterfield, UK
This is the 1/72 Hasegawa High Visibility Kit [E3 #00533], with Markings from the Superscale sheet #72-595.
The kit was built out of the box, with the only additions being the overhead ejector handles on the seats, and a couple of hydraulic lines on the landing gear from bits of copper wire. Also I used some extra TCS from other kits to replace the in-box chin pods.
The construction was started on the 1 Jan 2005, and it went very well, and quick compared to the more current tooling. After most of the major construction work was completed, I used various Alclad II on the leading edges, gun, and engines. These were then masked off, and the whole kit was sprayed with Humbrol #129 (FS26440). The tails and ventral fins were not glued on as yet and were sprayed with Humbrol Flat Black. After a few of light coats of Klear(Future) were sprayed, the decals were applied . There were registration issues with a lot of the stencil data and insignia, so I raided my spares for these, the main markings being OK. Also when I thought I had finished decalling, I then noticed whilst checking my pics that there was a white pin stripe around the edge of the Skunk Stripe. (Moral: dont rely on the instructions absolutely if you have reference pics)
Once decals were on, cured and cleaned, another few of light coats of Klear(Future) were sprayed. I then removed the masking from the Alclad areas and the canopy
An enamel wash of Humbrol #32 and thinners was liberally appled and then cleaned up with kitchen towel damped with thinners. Finally all the landing gear, doors, antennas and weapons were added.
After taking these photos I realised the fuselage had split behind the canopy :(
